BURKHOLDERSALE Last week, auctioneer Jay Witman was saying he hadn’t the “foggiest” idea what prices sand stone monumental archi tectural items would bring at the sale for Ray D. Burkholder, 758 W. Newport Road, Lititz. Saturday, after the sale, Witman exclaimed, “It was spectacular; there were tons of people there out of interest. This was an event you don’t see every day of the week. “There never was an auction of this kind in this area. You might have an auction with one stone water trough, not with 24. It was the same with stone grist mills.” He went on to say Burkholder collected these items years ago when no one wanted them. “He might have paid $5 for something. I think (this) was so big be cause it’s a different era, a different time. The sale was ad vertised nationally and brought about 1,000 people, with 242 regis tered bidders from 10 states, as far away as Michigan and Connecti cut. Items of special inter est were: a rare pair of sandstone pillars with wrought iron gates, $45,100; and a red sand- stone 12-foot trough with round ends that brought $24,200.
