For Jerry Ensor of Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers, the answer is simple. Ensor recently received the “Sanitarians Award” presented by the Penn sylvania Association of Food and Environmental Sanitarians (PAMFES). The award was presented during the PAMFES Annual Conference, May 15-16 at Penn State University. The honor was bestowed on Ensor for his com mitment to the industry and the dairy farmers he serves in Penn sylvania and Maryland. Dairy Expert Dr. Hutjens Speaks At Producer Meeting GETTYSBURG (Adams Co.) Renaissance Nutrition, Inc., along with Biota! and Mycogen, featured two outstanding speak ers at a recent dairy producer’s meeting. Speakers included well known Dr. Mike Hutjens from the University of Illinois, and a regularly featured author in such publications as Hoard’s Dairyman and Dairy Today, and Richard Bennek, a special ist in agronomy and dairy sci ence from Mycogen Seeds. The dinner event was held on Tues day, May 22, and attended by a large number of producers from south-central Pennsylvania and Maryland. I’ve had a rewarding career and it has been a pleasure working with dairy farmers.” “The PAMFES Awards and Resolutions Committee selects a field representative with years of experience that are successful at what they do,” said Eugene Topics presented included: 11 Management Factors That Can Make You $33,000; More Income With An 80 Cow Herd; Forage Quality And Fermenta tion Profiling; and Importance Of Selecting Hybrids For Silage. Producers, along with other guests, were invited to partici pate in the discussion, as well as to ask questions pertinent to the topics presented. Prior to this dinner event, Dr. Hutjens spent the day touring area farms and providing insight into a variety of management and nutritional concerns. The committee reviews a person’s love and’service for the industry, and how they help farmers become successful. “We select a person that does a good job and has a good rapport with the farmers they work with,” Frey said. Ensor’s background and suc cessful career reflect his exten sive knowledge and experience in the dairy industry. He has served as a field representative with Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers for 17 years, and pre viously for Maryland Coopera tive and Dairymen, Inc. Ensor began his career calibrating farm tanks and as a lab techni cian for Maryland Cooperative. “During the past 35 years, I have worked in nine counties in Pennsylvania and five counties in Maryland,” Ensor said. “I’ve driven many, many miles, some times 60,000 a year.” Ensor resides in Westminster, Md., and his field territory in cludes York and Adams coun ties in Pennsylvania and Frederick, Carroll, and Balti more counties in Maryland. He was raised on a dairy farm in Forest Hill, Md., and was a member of the winning Mary land 4-H Dairy Judging team that competed in lowa and Bris tol, England. He and his wife Ruth have four children and seven grandchildren. House Approves Miller’s Agriculture By-Product HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Continuing its commit ment to support 21st century ag riculture in the commonwealth, the House approved legislation introduced by Rep. Sheila Miller (R-129) to encourage the use and development of improved methods of managing manure and other agricultural by products. “This is great news for the ag riculture industry and for our environment,” Miller said. “We must continue to improve our farming practices if we are to remain competitive and main tain agriculture as the number one industry in Pennsylvania. “Protecting the environment is also important because farm ers rely so heavily on the quality of our land and water re sources,” she said. It will be re sponsible for assessing regional manure and by-product reduc tion needs and for encouraging cooperation among the agricul tural community, industry and local government regarding the use and development of the new technologies. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
