Convenience Can
Save Money
LEESPORT (Berks Co.) Did
you know that convenience foods
save time and effort that’s how
they got their name. But some ac
tually can save you money.
Instant mashed potatoes cost
less because the water has been
taken out and there’s less bulk to
ship. Others cost less starting
with fresh ingredients because
they have been canned or frozen
so there isn’t the spoilage that oc
curs with fresh foods.
Still others cost you less than
starting with basic ingredients be
cause the manufacturer buys in
bulk and passes on some of the
savings.
The following convenience
foods save you money: Instant
mashed potatoes; preshredded
packaged coconut; canned cran
berry sauce; frozen, canned, or
powdered orange juice and
drinks (fresh squeezed costs
about 2'A times more); bottled
lemon and lime juice (but not
squeeze bottles); boxed lasagna
skillet dinner; soy protein patties;
canned chicken chow mein;
boxed pizza mixes; canned Span
ish rice; frozen fish sticks.
These convenience foods cost
more than homemade (make
them using basic ingredients):
Frozen meat pot pies,. canned
stew, frozen chicken chow mein
and chicken a la king, canned
pork and beans, frozen batter
dipped deep-fried chicken and
shrimp, canned salad sandwich
spread, stroganoff skillet dinner,
frozen haddock dinner, shrimp
newburg and shrimp Creole,
yeast roll mixes, frozen and
ready-to-serve yeast rolls, frozen
ready-to-serve brownies, and
cheese spread in a pressure can.
