Popular legend has it that they were made by sailors during long voyages at sea. However, it is more likely that many were made on land by their sweet hearts. Subjects included naval warships, private yachts and merchant vessels. The ships are generally shown broadside, displaying their dis tinctive features before the wind, with full sails and oversize flags unfurled for identification. Often included are coastal scenes, nau tical gutdeposts such as light house, beacons, and other ships. Not every ship portrait is as old as it looks, nor of top quality. Yet another technique, Berlin wool-work became popular in England by the 1830 s, a couple of decades after it was intro duced in Germany. Colored wor steds were embroidered on can- AT 2:00 P.M. vas, with design printed on squared paper. The patterns were made in Berlin and were copied by counting the squares of the canvas. Clues: The early examples of Berlin work can be recognized by the use of silk and glass beads. These are more desirable than the mid-19th century versions that used garish color worsteds and a variety of Victorian mottos and Biblical subjects. Other de signs with flowers are considered more attractive. Another category of needle work pictures is mourning art. Highly collectible are late 19th century English, arts and crafts embroideries with repeat pat terns of flowering trees and birds.
