B: >3O-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 3,2001 French Furniture (Continued from Page B 28) have the fabric stripped in a cor ner to check the construc tion...that’s what a dealer would do. For a brief period, after the death of Louis XIV, Philippe, Duke of Orleans reigned as re gent. During his brief rule, a new style evolved replacing baroque. The gilt mounts used shell and floral motifs, and delicate asym metrical scrolls. Known as “Re gence” it was popular until the middle of the eighteenth century, when it became even more ele gant and flamboyant rococo. It was during this period that the cabriole leg was introduced. Some of the best buys in repro duction Regence are seat furni ture with cane seats and backs. The Directorie French period of the Revolution (1799-1804) often featured slim, straight legs in the Greco-Roman style with stylized motifs. Many pieces with new uses were created at this time. Among them the se mainiere with a drawer for a change of clothing everyday of the week and small cabinets mounted on straight thin legs. Mahogany was the popular wood. Rosewood, tulipwood and fruitwoods were combined in geometric marquetry or parquet ry. There is a delicacy lacking in other styles of French furniture. PUTT, AUCTIONEER AU-000733-L Phone Akron (717) 859-1430 Walter S. Newhall’s tragic death the upper presentation banner on the flag was changed to reflect the loss and express the grief of both the regiment and the citizens of Philadel phia. In late December 1863, Clement S. Barclay, a prominent Philadelphian, presented the Newhall Memorial Flag to the regiment at their camp near Warrenton, Virginia. For the remainder of the Civil War, this flag took it’s honored place beside the unit’s other flags at the head of the regiment. The Newhall flag accompanied the regiment in camp and on the battlefield until July 21,1865 when the regiment was disbanded upon comple tion of military service. At this time the officers of the regiment voted unanimously to present the flag to Walter’s mother, Mrs. Thomas A. Newhall, then living in Germantown, Pa. At the end of the war, the third Pennsylvania Cavalry had participated in more than 40 major engagements and had lost over 170 men. On March 8, the Alderfer Auction Company in Hatfield, Pa. will be honored to offer for auction the Walter S. Newhall Memorial Flag at it’s quarterly fine arts catalog auction. The flag, measuring 54 x 60 inches, is a true piece of American history and has been pre served and protected by members of the Newhall family for over 135 years since its pre sentation to the family in 1865. Regimental flags and standards of the American Civil War rarely appear for sale, particularly one with such importance and provenance. For further information, see aldeiiferauction.com.
