A32-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 3,2001 COLUMBUS, Ohio - Farmers looking for new ways of doing business because of low commod ity prices could be eligible for a grant, said Mike Hogan, agricul ture and natural resources agent at the Carroll County office of Ohio State University Extension and Ohio sustainable agriculture co-coordinator. The North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program has allocated about $350,000 for the 2001 Producer Grant Pro gram. The program lets farmers ex plore new enterprises and prac tices such as direct marketing of fresh vegetables, organic farm ing, agritourism, rotational graz ing, precision farming, biological weed and pest control, soil con servation, or anything else that would help a farm become more economically viable, environ mentally friendly or socially ac ceptable, Hogan said. In 2000, Ohio was awarded more producer grants than any of the 12 states in the North Central Region, which includes Illinois, Indiana, lowa, Kansas, Michi gan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ne braska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Individual farmers can com pete for grants of up to $5,000, and groups of three or more farmers from separate operations can receive grants of up to $15,000. The individual grants are for one year, and the group grants are for two years. For example, farmers already involved with farm markets could receive fund ing for more in-depth consumer studies that help show where their markets should be several years down the road, he said. Previous grant recipients are eligible to apply and should sub mit a progress report if their ap plication is related to their previ ous grant, Hogan said. The deadline for applications to be turned into the North Cen tral Redon SARE office is March 30. Grant recipients will be named on June 21, and fund ing should begin in autumn 2001.
