creating a reproduction quilt.
If you have a quilt, it is im
portant to handle it properly to
preserve its beauty.
“Don’t ever send quilts to dry
cleaners, which often ruins
them,” Bevin warned. Special
quilt soaps will remove dirt from
delicate fabrics. Place soap in
machine and agitate, then add
the quilt. Allow the quilt to soak
20 minutes without agitation
then gently agitate for two min
utes. Wring gently to remove
excess water.
Do not store quilts in plastic
bags which can cause mold. In
stead wrap in a sheet. Do not
allow it to come in direct contact
with wood, which will leach the
stain.
Display out of direct sunlight.
“Accept and appreciate the
age of a quilt,” Bevin said. Her
collection includes many quilts
with tattered areas, but she still
sees beauty in them. “They tell a
story.”
An intense amount of
quilting is featured in this
quilt. Although some colors
have faded, the indigo, a
popular shade during the
1840 s, retained its bright
ness.
