Washington County Hosting Maryland Holstein Convention HAGERSTOWN, Md. The Maryland Holstein Convention will be hosted by the Washing ton County Holstein Associa tion, March 16 and 17, in Hagerstown, Maryland. The day meeting and banquet will be held at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel on Route 40 east of Hagerstown on March 16. Following close consultations with Brazilian government offi cials, the USDA recently an nounced that it is temporarily suspending the import of pro cessed beef and associated prod ucts from Brazil. This decision is a temporary action pending the release of re quested data to complete a bovine spongiform encephalo pathy (BSE) risk assessment. USDA is working with Brazi lian agriculture officials to expeditiously complete a risk as sessment regarding this matter. USDA, along with ap propriate federal health agen cies, will continue to monitor and assess this situation and take any additional actions that may be necessary or appropri ate. USDA’s BSE policy has been to be proactive and preventative. USDA has taken stringent mea sures in surveillance, preven tion, education, and response. In 1998, he established a business that offered cell pro cessing and storage for animal owners. This led to him joining Cyagra. Gillespie will provide a lay man’s introduction to the sci ence of cattle cloning and review how cloning may be used by dairy producers and possibly impact their business. The ladies program will fea ture home decorating tips with Karen Tatman, Longaberger Consultant, showing versatile ways of using Longaberger bas kets. This will be followed by Caroline King, Massage Thera pist, giving a demonstration and background on massage therapy. A guided tour of the Antietam Battlefield will be available for the juniors. Lunch will be at the Western Maryland Research Farm, followed by a program presented by Jeff Semler, Exten sion Education, 4-H/AGNR. The program, titled “Animal Science on the Cutting Edge,” shows the science behind the cow. The juniors may experience “hand on” participation, or just watch as they dissect and ex plore the reproductive tract of a cow.
