190 -Foraging Around, Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 10,2001 PFGC Executive Director’s HERSHEY (Dauphin Co.) The Pennsylvania Forage and Grassland Council (PFGC) was supported by its 225 members and 25 supporting organizations as well as the Pa. state personnel during 2000. Some of the major activities and programs involving the council in 2000 were: • Co-sponsored the Hay Show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2000. • The council co-sponsored the 2000 Pennsylvania Grazing and Forage Conference March 1-2 at Grantville. • The council supported the Penn State Ag Council in its efforts to build partnership with Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences. • Seven members of PFGC at tended the annual meeting of the American Forage and Grassland Council in Madison, Wis., July 16- 19,2000. • Co-sponsored the Agricultural Progress Days at Rockspring Farm of Pa. State Aug. 15, 16-17, 2000. The council conducted a hay show at Ag Progress Days. • The council conducted its annual summer social event at the Wayne Harpster farm Aug. 16, 2000 during Ag Progress Days. This year was special in that this was the 40th year of PFGC and the his tory, “Pennsylvania Forage and Grass land Council The First 40 Years 1960- 2000,” was written by John Baylor. Copies were pre sented to those at tending and sent to members. • Lancaster Farming newspaper provided a special forage section again this year called “Foraging Around” in four issues in 2000. This section has been very popu lar with readers of the newspaper. • The Pennsylva nia Forage and Grassland Newsletter was sent to members four times during the year. • Council was represented by Roman Stoltzfoos in the forage spok esperson contest at AFGC annual meet ing in Madison, Wis. in July, 2000. Annual Report • A pilot forage growers program was conducted in 1999 and software was developed from the pilot and sent to interested counties to con duct their own program in 2000. • The council presented scholar ship at Penn State to Kendra Weaver, Timothy Reid, Matthew Jewart, and Taryn Wentzel, stu dents in dairy and animal science and agroecostystems. A $750 schol arship was presented to Kenneth Cristfulli from Delaware College. • Awards were presented at the annual meeting to New Holland North America with Richard Adams accepting the special award; to Penn Jersey Extension Partner ship for the research/extension award; to J.B. Harrold, project grass coordinator, Somerset conservation district, for the conservation award; Dale Bracken, Indiana County, the conservation farmer award; to Don Bothell, Indiana County, and Glenn and Robin Gorrell, Bradford County, for the pasture producer awards.
