BUCHARTAND MUSSELMANSALE In an auction filled with valuable made-in- Lancaster-County items, one piece stood out: a late 18th-century Dutch cupboard which sold for $lOO,OOO on Saturday at Horst Auctioneers in Ephrata. The painted Chippendale step-back cupboard was “probably the finest Dutch cup board we’ve ever han dled,” said cataloger Clarence E. Spohn. The cupboard was sold to antique dealer Phillip Bradley, Chester County. The previous owner, Mary S. Buchart of York, acquired the piece around 1950 from dealer Forest McMullen, who operated an Eph rata antiques show in the 1960 s and ’7os, Spohn said. Also sold were Lehn ware items made by Joseph Long Lehn of Elizabeth Township in the 19th century, includ ing a water bucket for $22,000. The Lehnware was from the collection of Sara B. Musselman of Murrell, near Ephrata. Another highlight of the sale was Walter Stee ly’s mid-20th century chairs. Steely was a Lititz resident. In all, more than 500 lots of antique furniture, china, glass, silver, Lehn ware, pottery and primi tives were sold. There were 400 registered bid ders at the sale, which also included items from the collection of Robert G. Grunder, Tru mansburg, N.Y. In addition to the water bucket, the follow ing Lehnware items were sold: two cup and saucer sets, $2,600 each; a cov ered saffron cup, $2,000; two sugar buckets, $lO,OOO and $2,100; an individual salt, $2,200; a sewing box, $2,900; and three master salts, $2,400, $2,800 and $4,700; and two minia ture blanket chests, $B,OOO and $2,500.
