824-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 3,2001 Lancaster Farming O THE ANTIQUE DETECTIVE Anne Gilbert Many Techniques Used In Early Coverlets The ongoing interest in quilts and quilt-making has resulted in many early and unusual exam ples coming to market, some dat ing to the late 18th century. A re cent Skinner auction included a pieced and quilted linsey woolsey coverlet, c. 1780. Several techniques were used including crewel work. It wasn’t identified as American or Eng lish. A paper tag had only the maker’s name, “Annie Brown, c. 1780.” Quite colorful and measuring 84 '/>” x 92”, even with some damage it was estimated at $1,200-1,500. Apparently the buyer who paid a whopping $14,950 knew something the auction house didn’t. Or, perhaps it was identi fied as of American origin. Begin by knowing history, materials used and techniques. Let’s analyze the coverlet that sold for $14,950. Linsey-Woolsey is a fabric made using two threads; one wool, the other linen. The result was a coarse fabric with the top a plain dyed color, such as raspberry, pink or light blue. The backs were either left natural or dyed gold or yel low. The final result was layered with carded wool, then finished off with detailed quilted motifs, such as feathers, hearts and flow ers. Crewel work examples can be recognized by stylized floral designs. Others included cornu copia, crossed diagonal designs. Unlike the more familiar quilt forms, linsey-woolsey coverlets are heavy and large. The weaving of wool and linen was done in both English and American Colonial homes before the Revolutionary War. After that cotton became the material of choice. So, using the above 4:00 Wicker Babv Carriai GLADES AUCTION CO. SALE ON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 17, 2001 AT 9:00 A.M. Chances that it is an American textile rarity are good since the collectors were knowledgeable and devoted years to the research of their col lections. Woven coverlets of another type were made on looms in de signs after the Colonial house wife had spun the wool. How at tractive they were depended on the talent of their maker. Consid ered choice these days are those with stylized mo tifs, signed, and dated. These de signs ranged from animals to houses, flowering trees, and even farm scenes. The colors were developed from dyes made by the housewife from various plants in her gar den. An excep tion was indigo. It was desirable since the dark blue color didn’t fade. Many linsey-woolsey cover lets of that early time used indi go. Patterns for weaving were on paper that was handed down from family to family. Over the years, new touches were added until the original pattern all but disappeared.
