FDA Results of Texas Feed
“Reports recently from the
FDA indicate there were very
small amounts of meat-and
bone meal detected in cattle feed
supplements produced by a
Purina feed mill in Texas last
week. Purina Mills announced
that it is voluntarily purchasing
all 1,222 of the animals held in
Texas and the animals will not
enter the food chain.
“Despite the fact that we do
not have BSE in this county and
believe that the feed from the
Texas situation posed no harm
to cattle, we appreciate Purina’s
prompt response to rectify the
situation.
“It’s important to note that
the situation in Texas is a com
pliance issue, not a safety issue,

ance with FDA feed ban regula
tions. The 1997 FDA feed ban
prohibits the feeding of mam
malian derived protein supple
ments to cattle and other
ruminants that might be at risk
for carrying the BSE infectious
agent. It is a critical firewall
measure and was implemented
as an extra precaution against
the BSE infectious agent. While
BSE has not been found in the
U.S., the feed ban assures that if
BSE somehow ever did get into
this country, it would not spread
and could be quickly isolated
and eradicated.

America is host to approxi
mately 98 million cattle. While
this number is declining, U.S.
cattle are fed to higher weights.
Per-capita consumption of
meat is projected to be 200
pounds this year. Since 1990,
this number has increased by 20
pounds per person, leading
Moore to question whether
America is truly moving toward
a vegetarian diet.
“A good economy increases
that number, that’s why the
economy has such an impact on
2001,” said Moore.
For supply prospects, said
Moore, the percentage of cattle
will go down 3.5 percent, at $72-
$77 per hundredweight. Hog
and broiler supplies are ex
pected to trend upward three
percent, and turkey 2.5 percent.
