The 1997 FDA feed ban prohibits the feeding of mam malian derived protein supple ments to cattle and other ruminants that might be at risk for carrying the BSE infectious agent. It is a critical firewall measure and was implemented as an extra precaution against the BSE infectious agent. America is host to approxi mately 98 million cattle. While this number is declining, U.S. cattle are fed to higher weights. Per-capita consumption of meat is projected to be 200 pounds this year. Since 1990, this number has increased by 20 pounds per person, leading Moore to question whether America is truly moving toward a vegetarian diet. “A good economy increases that number, that’s why the economy has such an impact on 2001,” said Moore. For supply prospects, said Moore, the percentage of cattle will go down 3.5 percent, at $72- $77 per hundredweight. Hog and broiler supplies are ex pected to trend upward three percent, and turkey 2.5 percent. “With the right management, uantum SYSTE M BIGGER IS BETTER!
