Some old recipes no longer work because the ingredients in moth balls have been changed to comply with FDA standards. I believe it is necessary to buy a chemical from the drug store to make the mothballs bounce, but I don’t recall the name of the ingredient. Thompson, Hunt ingdon, for sending a recipe that she writes is fun to try. Scented Fire Starters Pinecones Paraffin Red crayons Cinnamon oil Remove paper from crayons. Caution: Do not melt paraffin over an open flame or directly on burner. Melt paraffin in double boiler over hot water. Add pieces of crayon to paraffin until desired color is obtained. Add cinnamon oil (1 teaspoon per IVi pounds paraffin). Holding pine cones with tongs, dip in paraffin, allowing it to dry between coats. Continue dipping until cones are well coated. Allow paraffin to harden completely. To use as fire starters, place several pine cones under logs and light cones. These make wonderful gifts for friends with fireplaces, fun to use outdoors, or pretty displayed in a basket in your living room. If used for ornamental pur poses, glitter can be lightly sprinkled on final layer of paraffin before it hardens completely.
