To acquire the designation, Mandie competed with 16 other applicants at the state contest, which later qualified her to compete at the national level. The compe tition required an application, interview with judges, a 3-5 minute prepared spcilh and an answer to an impromptu question at the youth banquet. Mandie’s impromptu question required her to elaborate on the reason for partici pating in DHIAR (Dairy Herd Improve ment Association Registry) and the linear appraisal system used to classify goats on scale. Mandie said she encourages involve ment with DHIAR and the appraisal sys tem because it helps when choosing blood lines to improved herd characteristics. “I felt very calm when answering the impromptu question,” Mandie said. The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will present a program on the history of the Pennsylvania Barn on Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. The program will take place inside the actual 19th Century Pennsylvania Bam which today is the Lancaster County Envi ronmental Center located along Eshelman Mill Road. The program will explore the search for the origin of the Pennsylvania Barn. It will be given fcy barn expert Bob Ensingmer, who has written and researched extensive ly on this subject. His program will include slides and photographs.
