A crowd of 225 friends and families of Northampton County 4-H attended the Annual 4-H Achievement Banquet. 4-H youth and leaders were honored for their accomplish ments and dedicated service throughout the year. Special awards were presented to the following 4-H’ers: 4-H development fund schol arships to Diane Petraitis of Bath, Julie Blackadar of Riegel sville, and Sarah Heimbach and Jill Parker, both from Bethle hem. The 4-H Center Board Memo rial Scholarship was presented to Dana Schrantz and Rachael Slot cavage. 4-H Poster Contest Winners were Brett and Ryan Hoadley and Rebekah Brown. Officer of the year awards were presented to presidents, Keith Hontz and Shelly Knee bone; secretaries, Nicole Kond ziela, Annie Stewart, and Sarah Pennsylvania 4-H Shooting Sports Committee To Conduct Instructor Certification Course The Pennsylvania 4-H Shoot ing Sports Committee will con duct a training program and in structor certification course for adults interested in working with youths April 6-8, at Camp Sus que in Lycoming County. The workshop will be funded in part by grants from the “The NRA Fountain,” Federal Car tridge Corporation, and the Na tional Wild Turkey Federation. Programming will involve spe cialized-training and certification for instructors in the NRA/4-H rifle, pistol, and shotgun shoot ing sports programs. Archery participants will receive National Archery Association Level 1 cer tification. Program participants will be certified to organize 4-H project clubs and conduct in struction in these program areas. One hundred nineteen 4-H volunteer leaders from 42 coun ties participated in the Pennsyl vania 4-H Shooting Sports work shop in April 2000 in Butler County. This year’s program will fea ture presentations by NRA Disa bility Services. Director Dave Baskin will assist leaders who work with disabled individuals/ Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 6, 2001-815 Buskirk; treasurers, Kelsey Beal and Erin Hontz; and news re porter, Sean Kneebone. 4-H adult volunteer leaders were honored for their hard work and dedication to 4-H. Mildred Arndt was honored for 45 years of service as a 4-H leader; Rosa leen Fehnel and Lee Snyder for 25 years as a 4-H leader; Julie Ann Hurlock for 10 years as 4-H leaders; Janice Buskirk, Linda Hower, Betsy Newcomb, Sue Voorhees, Sherwood Geiger, Ned Hower, and Sharon Peck for five years as 4-H leaders; and 19 leaders were honored for being first-year leaders. A special plaque was awarded to Wayne Hachten, DVM, as re cipient of this year’s 2000 “Friend of 4-H” Award for his generous help with several ani mal science clubs. Representa tives Rich Gruecela and Craig Dally made special presentations to award winning 4-H members in their districts. 4-H HAPPENINGS groups in shooting sports proj ects. Several related projects and activities will also be introduced during this year’s training, in cluding “Woodworking for Wildlife,” “Wildlife Through The Seasons,” “Endangered Spe cies,” and the Penn State 4-H Habitat Evaluation contest. The 4-H Shooting Sports pro gram has grown rapidly in Penn sylvania, with more than 3,000 youth’s ages 8 to 18 completing projects in this program area in 2000. 4-H members receive training in marksmanship, firearm safety, and handling. They also have the opportunity to compete in coun ty, regional, statewide, and na tional contests. Air pistol, air rifle, archery, shotgun, and .22 rifle contests are conducted for teens at 4-H State Achievement Days at Penn State University in July. In July 2000, two teams repre senting Penn State 4-H com peted with 17 other states in Na tional 4-H Competition at San Antonio, Texas. The archery and shotgun teams represented Penn sylvania well, bringing home the national championship and a number of team and individual trophies.
