How To Identify Many Quilt Types
Recognizing the many types of
quilts can be a challenge for be
ginning collectors. It also helps in
dating them. Among them Crazy
quilts. Album and Log Cabin.
Clues: Crazy quilts are a good
example of unusual names, based
on the fact they had no fixed de
sign. However, their form and
function has changed since they
were first made in the American
colonies. These were made from
whatever fabric scraps were on
hand, fitted together like a pic
ture puzzle. As cloth became
more available in the colonies,
the Crazy quilts became a thing

name “album” was taken from
the then popular hobby of put
ting mementos into scrapbooks.
The album quilt used the same
idea with sloth squares. Each of
the squares had a central motif
such as an animal or a flowering
tree.
Other subjects for the applique
squares used identifiable Balti
more buildings, religious motifs
and overall geometric patterns.
What makes them so special is
the intricate piecing and appli
que work. For the special album
bridal quilts almost invisible
stitches were used. Each square
was supposedly made by a differ
ent friend of the bride and auto
graphed by the maker in India

Log Cabin quilts are easily rec
ognized since part of their de
signs always resemble the logs
that were stacked in pioneer
homes. As such, they are symbol
ic of the actual log cabins. The
center square is usually red, rep
resenting the placement of a fire
place or hearth. They were popu
lar in the late 19th century.
A Show quilt can also be a
Crazy quilt or a Log Cabin quilt.
They were made in those styles,
but strictly for display and of
silk. Other popular patterns such
as the “Star of Bethlehem” were
transformed to silk show quilts.
Currently, popular because of
their bold colors and large geo
metric designs are Amish and
Mennonite quilts. Printed fabrics
were rarely used. Amish Crib
quilts can be expensive not only
because not many were made,
but few have survived.

event such as the 1876 Centenni
al. They used such symbols as
the Stars and Stripes, American
heroes and statesmen. The most
popular symbol was the Ameri
can Bald Eagle. For quilters
commemorating the 1976 Bicen
tennial, the eagle was an impor
tant motif.
A most fascinating, and lesser
known type, is the Hawaiian
(Kapa) quilt It was a spinoff
from missionaries’ patchwork. It
was made of two whole pieces of
material and appliqued in a free
style Island motif, usually a sin
gle color on white. Pattern de
signs included the breadfruit,
turtles, ferns, the crescent moon
and basket of flowers.
Trapunto quilting began in
fourteenth-century Italy. In
America from 1800 through the
Civil War, two layers of clothes
were stitched together with a de
sign: popular examples were
flowers and vines. The use of bat
ting stuffing in the largest design
areas gave it a raised look.
