As such, they are symbol ic of the actual log cabins. The center square is usually red, rep resenting the placement of a fire place or hearth. They were popu lar in the late 19th century. A Show quilt can also be a Crazy quilt or a Log Cabin quilt. They were made in those styles, but strictly for display and of silk. Other popular patterns such as the “Star of Bethlehem” were transformed to silk show quilts. Currently, popular because of their bold colors and large geo metric designs are Amish and Mennonite quilts. Printed fabrics were rarely used. Amish Crib quilts can be expensive not only because not many were made, but few have survived. For quilters commemorating the 1976 Bicen tennial, the eagle was an impor tant motif. A most fascinating, and lesser known type, is the Hawaiian (Kapa) quilt It was a spinoff from missionaries’ patchwork. It was made of two whole pieces of material and appliqued in a free style Island motif, usually a sin gle color on white. Pattern de signs included the breadfruit, turtles, ferns, the crescent moon and basket of flowers. Trapunto quilting began in fourteenth-century Italy. In America from 1800 through the Civil War, two layers of clothes were stitched together with a de sign: popular examples were flowers and vines.
