Youth Showmanship Contest HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) More than 200 young people participated in the Youth Showmanship Contest, held Sun day, Sept. 24, as part of the 37th Annual All-American Dairy Show. The judges for the event were junior division, Terri Pack ard of Boonsboro, MD; interme diate division, Dr. Katharine Knowlton of Blacksburg, VA; and senior division, Dan Karroll of Oldwick, NJ. Senior division winner Tara Kocher of McAristerville in Juni ata County received a $5OO sav ings bond donated by Centre County Holstein Club in Memo ry of Roger T. Green, a directors chair donated by Bob and Jane Pepple, and a jacket donated by the All-American Dairy Show. Other senior division winners included 2. Erin Roney, Adam* sville, Crawford County; 3. Ryan Cakins, Troy, Bradford County. All division winners received a neck ribbon and a rope halter. The afternoon program, New Life Assistant Dog, presented the remarkable story of animals se lected as puppies deemed cap able to be trained as an assistant to the physically disabled. The guest speaker was Katrina Anderson, director of the Quarry ville Library, who talked about the location, size, furniture that will be needed and many other details, at the conclusion she was presented with a donation from the organization. After these are learned, the dog spends several months with wheelchair occu pants. It is with this person, sharing the life, learning the ac tual needs, that the dog and the person forms a close bond of friendship. It is a new life for both the dog and the disabled person. The dog opens doors, turns lights on and off, and retrieves dropped articles. A dog sum mons help by barking and offers security for the disabled. The wheelchair occupant knows “a friend in need is a friend in deed” even if the friend does not speak but barks. pleasure to install Nancy Rintz as a member of the organization. With sorrow, we report the death of two members this year, Velma Goss and Helen Harnish. Pot holders was the theme for discussion, after the president told of different ways hot dishes were taken out of the oven and handled long before pot holders came into existence. In answer to the roll call, each of the 19 mem bers told why they had brought a pot holder and what special meaning it had to them. The meeting closed by singing “Brighten The Corner.” The Oc tober meeting will be held with Marie Foose with Barbara Stone as co-hostess when the society will have a food auction and col lect the dues.
