Hippology competition based on the
study of horses includes a written test,
identification of horse-related items, per
formance of horsemanship skills, judging
classes of horses and team problems. All
members of a team need to be well-versed
in a broad variety of horsemanship as
pects and knowledge.
Member of the hippology team will
compete a second time at the national
level at the Eastern National 4-H Horse
Roundup to be held in November in Lou
isville, Kentucky.
York County’s Horse Bowl team, which
placed second at the state competition,
qualified to compete as well at the Quarter
Horse Congress. Team members are Car
rie Firman, York; Marie Getz, Airville;
Danielle Spencer, Mechanicsburg; and
Caitlin Newcomer, York.

ference. A committee of extension staff
from across the Northeast had planned
the meeting during a five-year process.
Part of the conference included volun
teer leader and member involvement.
More than 100 volunteers provided many
hours of support as seminar coordinators,
tour guides, 4-H talent, and conference
helpers. In addition, many local 4-H clubs,
county advisory committees, and regional
program planning committees contributed
nearly $B,OOO in donations to the meeting.
Coaches for both the hippolo
gy and horse bowl teams are
Deborah Jeffrey, Wrightsville;
and Gwen Spencer, Mechanics
burg. In preparation for the up
coming national competitions,
the teams are practicing weekly,
as well as engaging in fund rais

take part in the Ohio event.

the York County Hippology
