York Horse Teams Galloping To National Competition JOYCE BUPP York Co. Correspondent YORK (York Co.) Two horse-related teams from York County stampeded their way through statewide competition in late August, earning team members the oppor tunity to compete at upcoming national equine youth events. Hippology team members placed first at State 4-H Achievement Days and are fi nalizing plans to compete nationally at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio during October. Team members are Jenna Moore, York; April Nabholtz, Fel ton; Jarek Shank, Mechanicsburg; and Laura Wirth, Camp Hill. Jenna Moore rides hunt seat and is a student at York’s Central High School. April Nabholtz is a home-schooled stu dent, and also rides hunt seat. Jarek Shenk attends Cumberland Valley High School, and competes in saddle seat and pleasure pony driving. The Penn sylvania 4-H Leadership Endowment Fund was recently awarded a $5,000 gift from the planning committee for the 1999 Annual Conference of the National Asso ciation of Extension 4-H Agents. The presentation was made during State 4-H Achievement Days at Penn State University. Hippology competition based on the study of horses includes a written test, identification of horse-related items, per formance of horsemanship skills, judging classes of horses and team problems. All members of a team need to be well-versed in a broad variety of horsemanship as pects and knowledge. Member of the hippology team will compete a second time at the national level at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup to be held in November in Lou isville, Kentucky. York County’s Horse Bowl team, which placed second at the state competition, qualified to compete as well at the Quarter Horse Congress. A committee of extension staff from across the Northeast had planned the meeting during a five-year process. Part of the conference included volun teer leader and member involvement. More than 100 volunteers provided many hours of support as seminar coordinators, tour guides, 4-H talent, and conference helpers. In addition, many local 4-H clubs, county advisory committees, and regional program planning committees contributed nearly $B,OOO in donations to the meeting. Coaches for both the hippolo gy and horse bowl teams are Deborah Jeffrey, Wrightsville; and Gwen Spencer, Mechanics burg. In preparation for the up coming national competitions, the teams are practicing weekly, as well as engaging in fund rais ing efforts toward travel costs to take part in the Ohio event.
