WASHINGTON, D.C. In letters to the Departments of Justice (DOJ) and Agriculture (USDA), National Farmers Union (NFU) called for investi gation of a proposed buyout of IBP, Inc., stock by an invest ment group that includes Archer Daniels Midland, Co., (ADM). This deal between two of the largest agribusiness processors would create a highly concen trated, vertically integrated food production system that would decrease competition and com promise the market power of farmers and ranchers trying to receive fair market prices in an already overly-concentrated in dustry, according to NFU. IBP is the largest producer of fresh beef and ADM is one of the larg est feed producers in the world, among its many agriculture pro cessing endeavors. This business combination illustrates the need to ensure the antitrust enforce ment review and authority of DOJ and USDA is adequate.
