A3O-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 2, 2000 CRI Names Scholarship Winners SHAWANO, Wis. Coopera tive Resources International (CRI), headquartered here, has named the three winners of its first annual “Founders” schol arships. They are Katie Lauber, Mt. Horeb, Wis.; Matthew Kaproth, Ithaca, N.Y.; and Michael Gowdy, Stafford Springs, Conn. Three scholarships of $5OO each are awarded annually to children of full-time CRI em ployees to reward young people within the CRI family who have demonstrated exceptional aca demic and leadership skills and have a desire to advance their education beyond traditional high school. They were estab lished to honor the cooperative’s pioneering leaders who were af filiated with organizations now a part of CRI. Matthew Kaproth, son of Mi chael and Nancy Kaproth, is a graduate of Ithaca High School in Ithaca, N.Y. who will be at tending SUNY College at Brock port. He hopes to someday be a secondary school teacher. Mat thew was an active 4-H member for 10 years and he and his fa ther started a new club within the 4-H program. Called the “Wingmasters,” it is for mem bers interested in raising pheas ants from day-old chicks. In each of its first two years, the club raised more than 800 chicks. Also active in scouting, Mat thew has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest level in scouting. He also has accepted increasing responsibilities, from patrol leader to senior patrol leader and now to assistant scoutmaster. Katie Lauber, daughter of Richard and Terry Lauber, Mt. Horeb, Wis., ranked fifth out of 112 students in her graduation class at Mt. Horeb High School. She will begin her college career this fall at the University of Wis consin-Madison, majoring in nursing. She would eventually like to work in a hospital, becom ing a charge nurse or a clinical manager of a unit. She has re cently worked in a local nursing home as a dietary assistant and resident services assistant. In high school, she was active in music and sports and was a three-year member of National Honor Society. She was active in 4-H for eight years and served as a camp counselor. Michael Gowdy, son of Bill and Janice Gowdy, is a Stafford High School graduate in Stafford Springs, Conn. Academically, he ranked 16th out of 95 in his class. Starting this fall, he will be attending Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Conn., where he will be majoring in music education. In high school, in addition to being active in music and the drama club, Michael participated in sports and was elected class president four years in a row. He was also active in 4-H and in his church, serving as a Sunday School teacher. A member of Na tional Honor Society, he says his dream is to be a high school music teacher.
