A32-Lancwtf Fanning, Saturday, August 26, 2000 ‘Feisty’ Pig Turns Into E-town Champion Hog ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff ELIZABETHTOWN (Lan caster Co.) Lynn Brandt watched a feisty pig, since it was born, race to supreme champion Tuesday night here at the Eliza bethtown Fair. A homebred Hampshire/Y orkshire/Duroc gilt, weighing 262 pounds, caught the attention of show judge Dave Holloway, Glen Rock, at the event. Lynn, 15, daughter of Linette and Dale Brandt, Middletown, said this was her first champion ship at E-Town. The Lower Dauphin High School sopho more is a member of the Lower Dauphin 4-H Livestock Club. Lynn said she walks the heavyweight champion, a gilt, which she picked to exhibit at E- Town, around the pen everyday. From the moment it was born, she noted, it was feisty. She also won reserve champion at the Dauphin County 4-H Roundup. She also plans to show at Farm Show. Reserve was a repeat for Amy Becker, 19, daughter of Marlin and Nancy Becker, Manheim. The 1999 Manheim Central High School graduate is enrolled at the York Technical Institute where she is studying culinary arts and restaurant manage ment. Amy, who won reserve overall champion last year at the fair, showed a 248-pound light heavyweight champion, a Grand champion market hog at the Elizabethtown Fair went to Lynn Brandt, left. Amy pur chased the gilt from Frank Feeser, Taneytown, Md. Amy said she exhibited at county roundup and plans to show at Denver, New Holland, and Manheim. Show judge Dave Holloway said a hog, to be champion, “has to catch the judge’s eye.” Also, it is a certain “style” the hog must have, including eye appeal.
