Some of the key issues that need to be considered when determining the appro priateness of a particular site for agricultur al development are described below. It should be noted that these issues may also be addressed through Best Manage ment Practices (BMPs), as are described throughout the remaining chapters of this manual, and therefore may not be an issue when it comes to siting. For example, if the manure from the facility will be processed immediately in a way that will eliminate odors, this practice may negate some of the siting concerns related to manure odors. Distances from residences / businesses, churches, schools and recreational areas Determine where the facility might be built on the proposed site and estimate how far the facility will be from neighbors. The land use of the neighboring properties should also be considered when evaluating a site for agricultural development. This can be done using topographic maps of the area which may be available for review at the local county conservation district office. Larger animal production facilities should be located away from nonagricul tural land uses where possible. Check the zoning requirements of the local municipality. Strong agricultural zon ing can help assure that the facility will not be a conflicting land use with current or future neighbors. Local zoning is a highly effective practice to address these concerns. (Turn to Page 47)
