A3B-Umcastef Farming, Saturday, August 5, 2000 Nutrient Pollution Loads In Pennsylvania Watersheds HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) DEP has contracted the Environmental Resources Re search Institute at the Penn State University to study and assess the extent of pollution from malfunctioning on-lot sewage systems, improper water well construction, non agricultural fertilizer usage, stormwater runoff and atmos pheric deposition. The Penn State study found the following sources contribute to nutrient pollution of Pennsyl vania’s waters through nitrogen and phosphorus deposition: Nitrogen- atmospheric depo sition 48 percent; agriculture 39 percent; storm water eight per cent; malfunctioning on-lot septic systems three percent; and non-agricultural fertilizer 0.3 percent. Phosphorus- agriculture 68 percent; malfunctioning on-lot septic systems 13 percent; storm water 10 percent; atmospheric deposition seven percent; and non-agricultural fertilizer 0.2 percent.
