Living together as mature
adults is achieved hy practicing
certain basic skills. At the out
set, keep handy some basic re
minders to yourself. They
should include the following:
• Recognize that a joint
household requires effort hy
each person to make it work.
The lives of each member will
continue to change, so he pre
pared to change expectations
and responsibilities according
ly.
• Be open about discussing
what bothers you. Air griev
ances promptly and in a
thoughtful way. Negotiate dif
ferences so there is something
positive in the outcome for
both generations.
• Don't fear occasional
flare-ups. They are part of life
and may clear the air. Don't
let the situation fester.
• Treat each other as a good
friend. This includes courtesy
and respect for individual
tastes and opinions.
• Use humor to brighten
your life and relieve tension, h
always helps to he able to
laugh at yourself.
• Avoid prying about girl
friends, boyfriends, or other
personal business. Sharing in
formation about such matters
should he voluntary.
• Make requests of parents,
sons, and daughters not de
mands. Demands threaten
good feelings about yourself
and others.
• Communicate calmly
about work you think needs to
he done. Try not to he a nag.
Discuss expectations about the
quality oj the work.

without giving up your own

darts. Gwen had to adjust the
pattern to lengthen the pants.
Matching plaids required pa
tience and skill. To complete the
ensemble, Gwen’s cotton blouse
featured gathered sleeves and
sporty French cuffs.
While the gold winners ad
vance to state competition, the
blue ribbon winners serve as al
ternates. These include Lindsey
Fackler, Dauphin; Rebecca
Light, Lebanon; Kristen Sander
son, Cumberland; Lindsay
Shirk, Lebanon; Emily Walker,
Franklin; and Barbara Reic
hard, Franklin.
Junior division contestants
are 13 years of age and younger
and are not eligible to advance
to competition. The Junior Gold
Ribbon winners include the fol
lowing: Sara Oyler, Adams; Ka
marin Minnich, Dauphin; Katie
McGinnis, Daupnm; Kailey
Troutman, Dauphin; Lora
Wenger, Franklin; and Denise
Hoke, York.
The Junior Blue Ribbon

SPECIAL SUMMER ISSUES
Holly Hoover loves sewing and competition. She also
said that she works well under pressure, evidence by her
latest escapade in waiting six days before competition to
select her fabric, combine three patterns, and stitch a per
fect fitting dress that captured another gold ribbon for her.
Senior judges for the event in
cluded Janell Berte, Ellen
Gardner, and Linda Rand.
Junior judges were Nancy Class,
Mary Rebeccah Irvin, and Chris
Kinney. Former Lebanon
County 4-H’er Jessica Watson,
Miss Lehigh County, taught
modeling and poise.
