Susan Hartman from St. Thomas is the 2000-2001 Franklin Dairy Princess. The daughter of Chet and Kathy Hartman, Susan is 18 years old and from a 60-cow dairy farm. The only contestant in the pageant held last week, Susan presented her skit, “Me and The Talking Cow,” and reviewed the many nutrients that milk and dairy products provide. When asked why she wanted to dairy princess, she answered that she was looking forward to promot ing milk and the dairy farmers who produce it. Susan’s parents own R Don Farms, a 200-acre farm where they have 60 cows and farm al falfa, corn, and other crops. On the farm she helps take care of the calves, milks, and helps with the field work. Two of her hob bies are writing and judging dairy cattle. Last year’s dairy princess Melinda Martin crowned Susan at the banquet. In her farewell speech, Melinda thanked the many people who helped her in her reign and credited dairy farmers for the opportunity to promote their products. Melinda and her two alternates, Betsy Martin and Grace Webster, traveled more than 3,500 miles, visited more than 3,500 stu dents, and presented more than 20 speeches. The committee pre sented Melinda with an en graved silver platter. Helping Susan will be Dairy Ambassadors Emily and Laura Grove, daughters of Jeff and Linda Grove. Emily is 16 years old, and Laura is 14 years old. During the banquet, the com mittee presented Julia Meyers with a wall hanging commerat ing her 10 years of service to the dairy princess committee.
