The Mid- Atlantic Brown Swiss Calf Sale was a history-making sale with a great crowd and excellent line up of quality calves. Held last month at the Frederick Fairgrounds, the sale averaged $2,645 on 34 calves, ranging in age from June 1999 to March 2000. “The sale had exceptional qual ity all the way through, with an outstanding headliner selling for $11,000,” said Cindy Warner, sale manager. “The three high-selling animals averaged $6,366, an im pressive sale result in anybody’s book.” The sale committee commend ed consigners for the quality of animals at this year’s sale. Ani mals for the sale were selected by the breeders. “They used their good judgement, honesty, and in tegrity to send quality animals,” said Warner. “It’s what this sale is built on and continues to thrive for.” Topping the sale was a blue-rib bon June 1999 heifer, Top Acres Coll Paris, cosigned by Wayne Sliker from St. Paris, Ohio. This tall, straight-lined, deep-ribbed, and dairy heifer was named first place summer yearling and junior champion at the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo held in March. She is sired by R Hart BC Collection and is out of a VG-86 Jetway with a nice index. Paris was purchased by Kenny Manion from Scotts ville, Kentucky. The second high-selling animal was cosigned by Steve Blessing from Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Blessing Jetway Mist, a correct, silky-hided December calf was an eye-catcher and commanded $4,100 from Mike Birch in White Hall, Mary land. Mist is a Jetway daughter out of a VG-85 Aytola with 25,000 pounds milk. Selling as third high-seller was a big and stylish December Jetway from one of the breed-leading families of the Brown Swiss. The calf, who is out of 3E-91 Top Acres Dotson Shiny, was consign ed by Dan Chard and Eric Green of Woodstown, New Jersey, and Woodsboro, Maryland. She was sold to Jarrett Remsberg from Middletown, Maryland, for $4,000. Consignments were sold to buy ers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ken tucky, North Carolina, Virginia, New York, and Maryland. “We had another good sale with solid and consistent prices, which continue to indicate the de mand and interest of new and re peat buyers at the sale,” said Den nis Smith, vice president of the Maryland Brown Swiss Associa tion. “The demand for Brown Swiss is on the rise, and the Mid- Largent, Penny Stahl. Atlantic Brown Swiss Calf Sale is a good place to get one.” According to Smith, two of this year’s All-American Brown Swiss were sold in the 1998 calf sale. “We get the kind of calves here that go on to do very well for the new owner,” he said. Six embryo packages, consisting of three frozen embryos, sold for an average of $1,252. The embryo packages featured genetics from leading cow families and national breed greats. All calves sold are automatical ly entered in the Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss Futurity with the first payment made by the Mary land Association. The seventh an nual Futurity will be held on Sun day, September 3, during the 2000 Maryland State Fair in Timoni um, Maryland.
