The event will conclude with a ques tion and answer session. “Ozone is one of the most sig nificant air contaminants in the world,” says Dave Aldenderfer, manager of DEP’s Air Quality Program. “It’s a serious air pol lutant and health threat in • the imaging center of lancaster Robert M. Operated by Lancaster Outpatient Imaging, LLC Pennsylvania.” The ozone season runs from April until October. DEP issues Ozone Action Alerts when levels become high enough to be harm ful in urban areas, encouraging people with pulmonary prob lems such as asthma and em physema to stay inside. According to Ferdinand, Penn State’s new monitoring station located at the future site of the Arboretum at Penn State is the first real-time ozone monitoring system in State College. Readings are taken hourly and reported directly to DEP’s Web site at www.dep.sta te.pa.us. 1 Faulkner Hcchingcr’s Genetically Engineered (Continued from Pago A 24) where 10-12 pesticide sprays are usually required to get a no worm com crop. “In 1999, we grew 1,000 acres of Bt com in 1999 with no spray,” he said. But the monarch butterfly study at Cornell is a hot-button topic with consumers, and the un known fall-out from the contro versial subject with consumers does not justify the risk of pro ducing GMO varieties in 2000 while conventional pest control measures are available. Mark Mason, Bt sweet com product manager for Novartis, which sells Attribute (Bt) com, presented convincing numbers on the GMO’s efficacy. “Con sumers are not very well in formed,” he said. “Fears are more easily communicated than the facts.” Novartis will con tinue to study effective insect management strategies, includ ing the use of GMOs.
