The Lackawan na/Wyoming County Holstein Club recently honored Herbert Steele of Tunkhannock with the club’s 2000 Hall of Fame award. The prestigious award was given during the club’s annual meeting, held on January 29 at the Meshoppen Methodist Church. Club member Robert Parr presented the award to Steele, recognizing him for his many accomplishments. Steele has been worked in the A.I. industry since 1953 and is employed by Taurus Services, Inc. According to Witter, “Herb Steele was one of the true pioneers in AI.” After graduating, Steele worked as a DHI milk tester in Susquehanna County. He started out in the AI industry working at Woodbourae Farm, owned by Norris Earnshaw. Steele handled the farm’s paper* work and developed AI in the area. In 1953, he began working at Broome-Tioga ABC as an A.I. technician. Steele also developed an in semination business called Golden Genes with Woodbome and Pineyhill Farms in New Jersey. The business used fresh semen from Woodboume Sires and NYABC bulls. Steele was employed by Genex and its predecessors, Broome-Tioga ABC, NYABC, and Eastern A. 1., for 2S years before leaving in 1978. In the 1960’5, he was one of the highest volume technicians in the industry, earning five high sales awards from Eastern during his career. In 1971, Steele joined Witter and Paul Dann to form Taurus Services, Inc. Steele continues to work with Taurus Services as a representative serving nine counties in northeast Pennsylva nia and does quality control semen evaluation in the Taurus lab. “He is a true friend to many,” said Witter. “If Herb says some thing, you better listen because it comes after much thought and will always be good advice.” Steele and his wife Leola live in Bradford County on the farm where he grew up. They have three grown children, Randy, Sally, and Susan. Steele is the chairman of the Wyoming County Dairy Show NCREDIBLE LOW PRICES! Steele’s name will appear on a plaque kept in the Wyoming County Extension Office as the 2000 Hall of Fame award recipi ent. His name will join the ranks of past Hall of Fame winners, in cluding Clifford Sands, Robert Parr, Donald Barth, Murry Fiske, Elwood White, and Wayne Sherwood. Steele was also presented a wall clock from Roger Sherwood, President of the Holstein Club. Other activities during the Holstein Association’s annual meeting including a dinner served to a record crowd fol lowed by a short business meet ing.
