After working on his older brother’s dairy farm and driving tractor trailer for awhile, Yoder bought his first farm and purchased 11 regis tered Holsteins in 1952. In 1953, Yoder married Reba. Nearly 50 years later, they are still happily married and have three children Carl, Carol, and Linda. Most of Yoder’s herd at Rocky Side farm can be traced to the original II animaLs Yoder purchased. The first homebred Excellent cow was Rocky Side Lena, a Hilltop Apollo Ivanhoe daughter. Since then, Jeff has bred 17 excellent cows. Five purchased cows also went Excellent. Yoder’s breeding goals for Rocky Side farm were size, legs, udders, temperament, and per cent fat. He concentrated on building consistency in his herd and won the Progressive Breeder Award 19 times from 1967 to 1987. Once Yoder was established in the dairy business, Rocky Side purchased very few cattle. Most of the heifers were calved out on the farm. In 1985, Jeff and Carl formed a partnership, with Carl follow ing the same breeding philoso phy as Jeff. In 1990, Carl moved the Rocky Side herd to Bedford County. A well-respected dairyman, Carl died tragically in a farming accident. And the herd was dispersed in 1993. Of the 146 head cataloged for the sale, 54 head had Excellent or Very Good dams. Now retired, Yoder enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren. He couldn’t attend last year’s convention for his induction because he was in Florida.
