Mark your calendars Dec. 14 - 16 to attend the 11th New Eng land Vegetable and Berry Growers Conference were at the Sturbridge Host Hotel. This conference, held every other year, is the largest and most comprehensive event of its kind in the region. Four concurrent sessions will be offered each morning and afternoon during the three days of the conference. With five half-hour talks in each ses sion, that’s a total of 120 edu cational presentations. This year, dozens of fanners are fea tured as speakers, along with extension, research, and indus try personnel. Half of the sessions address the ‘how-to’ of production and marketing practices for speci fic crops, such as strawberry, blueberry, brambles, tomato, pepper, lettuce and greens, sweet com, potato, pumpkins and winter squash, even herbs, ornamentals, and flowers. The other sessions deal with pro duction issues such as manag ing weeds, marketing reduced tillage systems, farm safety, niche crops, biological control, and season extenders. The speakers will be working with a computer that is hooked up to the Web. There is plenty of lime be fore and after the educational sessions to visit the large trade show, where more than 80 ex hibitors will display the latest in seeds, plants, irrigation and cultivation equipment, packag ing, pest control, fertilizers, books and much more. This is one of the best shopping oppor tunities for commercial horti culturists, and it’s an educa tional experience, too. Tuesday evening features a special program on Farm Fam ily Issues, with free admission. Wednesday night is the New England Vegetable and Berry Growers Association Annual Banquet.
