Reddy UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) Channa Reddy, distin guished professor of veterinary science, has been named head of the Penn Slate Department of Vet erinary Science. “Dr. Reddy has demonstrated outstanding leadership in our Col lege," said Dean Steele. “He is internationally recognized for his research contributions, he is an outstanding educator, and he will provide viskmary guidance for the department” Redcly is a renowned researcher, specializing in determining how antioxidant enzymes protect cells from oxidative damage. His most recent work centers on the molecu lar mechanisms that affect the anti oxidant functions of vitamin E and selenium. “The Department of Veterinary Science is very complex, with major functions involving research, teaching, extension and Named Veterinary Science Department Head diagnostics," Reddy said. “It is a challenge to strike a balance and find harmony among all these functions. That is what attracted me to this position." Reddy was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1992 and received the Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health for the years 1983-1988. He also was named an “Eminent Scientist of Tclugu Origin" by Ostnania Uni versity, Hyderabad, India, in 1993 and received the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Merit Award in 1970. Reddy teaches graduate courses on pathophysiology of disease mechanisms, cell biology, and the biochemistry and physiology of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. He has mentored 20 postdoctoral scholars, hosted eight visiting sci entists. and advised more than 20 doctoral students. Reddy also advises undergraduate students in the animal bioscience major. During the past 20 years, he has brought in more than $lO million in grants, mostly from the National Institutes of Health. Reddy has served on many advisory boards, including several assignments for the National Insti tutes of Health and assignments for the National Science Foundation, Roundup Posts Results KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.) The first annual combined Berks County livestock roundup and sale was conducted here recently at the Kutztown Fairgrounds. The livestock sale generated a total of $34,910, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Cancer Society, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He is a member of the Penn State Gerontology Center Advisory Board and served on the steering committee for Penn State's Life Sciences Consortium. The reserve, a 226-pound hog shown by Jared Treichler, Fleetwood, was sold for $475 to Keystone Farm Credit Champion market lamb, a 102-pound lamb shown by Jason Levan, Hamburg, was sold for $270 to John Lengel. Reserve market lamb, a 127-pound lamb exhibited by Jill Nciman, Fleet wood, sold to the First National Bank of Fredericksburg for $275. Beef and hog judge was Bob Mikcscll, State College.
