WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. About 200 4-ITers came from around New England to compete against one another in dairy competitions that included dairy shows, quiz bowls, fitting con tests, and showmanship, here at the 1999 Big E. The first few days of the fair are devoted to youth competi tions that culminated with the Farm Relief Package Provides Some WASHINGTON, D.C. - The farm relief package approved by Congress will provide badly needed assistance to the nation’s hard-pressed farmers and ranchers, the National Fanners Union (NFU) said recently. The $8.7 billion package, passed by the Senate and the House, includes about $5.5 billion in direct payments to offset low prices and $1.2 billion in disaster assistance. It also includes $475 million for oilseed producers, $2OO million for livestock produc ers, $ 125 million for dairy farmers, funding for the cotton Step 2 prog ram and relief for tobacco, peanut, and sugar growers. The package also extends the dairy support price for another year. “We are pleased Congress has taken steps to help alleviate the financial stress felt by the coun try’s farmers and ranchers. The assistance will give many produc ers a temporary economic reprieve as they make decisions about next year,” said NFU President Leland Swenson. “However, while this package is certainly welcome, it is far from ideal.** NFU led the charge for farm assistance and helped build sup port among national farm groups Agricultural Generators L.P. In the Ayrshire breed, Jeanie Graffam of Falmouth, Maine, captured the grand champion award, and Zachary Woodis of Spencer, Mass, took home reserve. Maine won the Ayrshire state herd contest. Seth Conway of Jefferson, N.H., took home the Brown Swiss grand champion trophy, Assistance by organizing a national agricul tural summit in April and worked closely with the 28 farm groups that attended to present a united front to Congress. NFU is pleased the package for the first time attempts to address mandatory price reporting, one of the organization's top priorities for several years. NFU arid that while the price reporting measure is not perfect, it is a step in the right direction. Because of other shortfalls in the bill, NFU also is urging Con gress to immediately begin work on action to fully address long term and disaster needs in agriculture. “Lawmakers should waste no time in tolling up their sleeves and getting to work today on a supple mental bill for additional disaster relief. Congress should also take this opportunity to make construc tive changes to the farm program now so we don’t find ourselves here again next year," Swenson stated. NFU would like to see Congress put in place a counter-cyclical farm safety net to help producers when prices fall and to give them the tools to generate mere revenue from the market, not from govern ment programs. 330 Fonderwhite Road, Lebanon, PA 17042 and Brian Whitlow, of Warren Conn, won reserve. The Brown Swiss State Herd blue ribbon went to New Hampshire’s entry. Vermont’s Misty Koloski won the Guernsey grand champion award, and Emily Everett of Williamsburg, Mass., was awarded reserve. Vermont’s entry in the state herd class won first place. In the Holstein show, Natalie Keene’s 2-year-old heifer won the grand champion for the breed. She is from Auburn, Maine. Peter Erb of Landaif, N.H., took home the reserve grand champion honors. Keene’s animal was a member of Maine’s first-place state herd. The grand champion in the Jersey show was owned by Lindsi Shaw of Orwell, Vt. Reserve was given to Kristin Lilly of Gill, Mass. New Hampshire won the state herd class. Shannon Walker of East Randolph, Vt. took home the grand champion honors and New Hampshire’s Shawna Stark won reserve. New Hampshire also claimed the state herd tro phy.
