But I barely have time to notice even the red leaves on the maple in our front yard. So much of my time has been spent in the kitchen. Last Saturday I baked four cakes - one for a pot luck supper, one for a cake auction, one for a neigh bor, and one for ourselves. And they could not be ordinary cakes but rather had to include apples and black walnuts while the other was a shoo-fly cake with different kinds of molasses. Both 4-H Roundup are very moist cakes and have received compliments Then I also have been cook ing extra at mealtimes Three meals were served to six people instead of the usual two of us They were all good eaters and licked the platters clean. It is good that I like to cook. Most of my flower plants have been potted and brought into the house. I intended to let them on the back porch for a while but our cats changed my mind. One morning when I looked at them, they had been upset and some leaves ripped to shreds. So they were put on win dowsills in the house When I pick the pole lima beans off the garden fence, the 4- and 5-year-old grandchildren help me. It is surprising to me that they learn so quickly how to pick them. It is so easy to pick them too young as the pods are so large. They can carry little buckets and empty them into a large bucket for me. And when we gather the tomatoes, they often see some that I miss. We have 14 grandchildren but the three on the farm are the only ones that we have been privileged to see grow up It makes you realize the passing of time as they go off to school 6, u
