Even though it is October, the roses have sprung to life and I can gather a bou quet every few days. The dwarf dahlias are full of buds but I fear that most of them will not get a chance to bloom. The other day I picked lima beans with the help of the three grandchildren. They like to eat the raw beans but I prefer to have mine cooked. They also like to hunt the last of the very sweet Concord grapes too as they are growing and are always hungry. They don’t let me go away with out handing out a little candy. The other week I picked up a few buckets of black walnuts. My husband likes the Stabler walnut because it is easy to crack and he can remove the kernel in one piece. Hence, the name “Rural Youth of Lancaster County.” The group was made up of smaller groups with various interests. There were speakers at monthly meetings and trips were planned to points of interest. An orchestra was formed, plays produced, seed orders taken, and parties planned where square dancing and round dances were the center of interest. It was a place for young rural youth to meet for wholesome recreation. And, meet they did, as many, many marriages were made as a result including my own.
