A22-Lancaater Farming, Saturday, September 2S, 1999 FFA’s Eastern Region VP ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff LAMPETER (Lancaster Co.) Busy as she is with a loaded state FFA officer schedule, Beth Frey took some time to raise a champion. At the West Lampeter Com munity Fair beef show Wednesday evening, Beth, Pennsylvania east ern region vice president, won supreme with her heavyweight champion steer, “Isaac.” Beth, 18, is the daughter of Craig and Cindy Frey, Washington Boro. The Manor FFA member and 1999 Penn Manor High School graduate purchased the 1,358-pound Angus/Maine Anjou crossbred supreme champion at the 1998 Keystone International Livestock Expo feeder calf sale. Beth said she named the steer after the Biblical Isaac. She noted that “genetics are a big thing" and said that what helped was the amount of time that went into working with the steer. That included walking it several times a week, from 20 minutes to a half hour, “whatever time I could find,” Beth said. This was her second Lampeter championship. She last won the contest in 1997. “Flik" was a first for 4-H’cr Dean Livengood. Dean, 19, picked up his first grand champion the final year of his 4-H showing career with Flik, a 1,258-pound Maine Anjou/ Angus crossbred steer Wednesday evening at the West Lampeter Community Fair. Dean, son of Earl and Joyce Grand champion FFA market ateer at Lampeter waa awarded to Beth Frey, left. Cheryl Fairbaim Judged the show. A hog sired by “Tabasco” proved red hot Wednesday here at the West Lampeter Community Fair swine show, bringing in the FFA trophy for swine showman partner/brothcrs Andrew and Allan Herr Jr. Andrew, IS, son of Allan and Amelia Herr, Lancaster, said he is in competition with brother Allan, 17, at the fair. But the brothers share profits of their endeavors, according to Andrew. Andrew showed the 250-pound light heavyweight champion hog, a Duroc crossbred from Dave Hol loway Genetics, Glen Rock. Tabasco sired the Duroc from a Jim Dandy sow. This was Andrew’s first grand champion at the fair. Andrew is a Livcngood, Lampeter, said he obtained the steer from Tim Fitz gerald in Virginia. Cheryl Fairbaim, livestock extension agent in Chester County, judged the show, commenting on the 4-H steer. Fairbaim said the steer was “long-bafted, handles well, and is even in finish.” She liked “the width of tump” and enjoyed the steer’s smooth handling. Dean is a graduate of Faith Mcn nonite High School. He works full time with his family’s Livcngood Organic Produce farm. There were a total of 18 steers to sell and one Farm Show steer. The Herr brothers are “learning together,” said their father, Allan. This year, according to Andrew, the partnership “is doing a lot bet ter,” picking up showman champ ions, most recently at the Solanco Fair. Tiffany, in the seventh grade at Martin Meylin Middle School, purchased the hog from Ken Wine bark, Myetstown. She said that a combination of good feed and exercising the hog about three to four times a week, for about a half hour each time, were key to taking home the 4-H trophy.
