Danny Miller Steer Wins
Grand At Somerset
MEYERSDALE (Somerset
Co.) “I’m so happy my dream
came true,” reported an ecstatic
Danny Miller, 17, Meyersdale,
when his Angus cross steer at
the Somerset County Fair was
pronounced grand champion of
the 1999 Market Steer Show.
When judge Jameson Walker
Dan Miller, 17, of the Buffalo Creek 4-H Club, had
the grand champion steer at the Someset County Fair, and
Angus weighing 1,255 pounds. With him is Jameson
Walker, type judge and Natali F 11, fr
champion steer at the Somerset County Fair. It was also
the club calf sale champion. Also pictured are fair queen
Natalie Foxwell, Meyersdale, and judge Jameson Walker
from Guys Mills, Crawford County.
Shawn Troutman shews off his county bred cham
pion steer at the Somerset County Fair in Meyersdaie. The
1,260-pound animal came from tom and Pam Fisher of
Boswell. The 13-year old from Wellersburg is Joined by
Judge Jameson Walker from Guys Mills.
from Guys Mills, Crawford
County, commented that the
steer’s finish was great and its
muscling excellent, the words
were music to Miller’s ears.
“The steer has power and bal
ance,” Walker said.
Danny’s parents are Lee and
Bonnie Miller and his sister,
Beth is 12.
The Buffalo Creek 4-Ifer had
exercised the steer daily, taking
the fine specimen out at 6 a.m.
and 9 p.m. when temperatures
were most comfortable.
Morning and evening, neigh
bors of “Just an Acre Farm,”
located on the edge of
Meyersdale, would watch the
progression down the hill and up
again.
At weigh-in, “Snots” regis
tered 1,255 pounds.
The teen-ager believes much
is owed to his parents for their
support last year when Danny
spent three months recovering
from serious back surgery in
October. The steer’s feeding and
fitting at the time was tem
porarily handled by them.
Gabriel Svonavec of
Rockwood had the reserve
champion with a crossbred steer
weighing 1,170 pounds. The ani
mal was the club calf sale cham
pion as well. Gabriel, 14, is Dave
and Betty Lou Svonavec’s son.
Shawn Troutman’s Chi
Angus Maine cross-bred steer
was the county bred champion
and Jesse Brant, Rockwood, had
the county bred reserve champi
on, a 1,215-pound Main Angus
crossbred.
Troutman, 13, is the son of
Larry and Kathy Troutman,
Wellersburg. The 17-year-old
Brant is the son of David and
Carol Brant.
Because of the dorught, hos
ing the animals was permitted
only on the day of judging. Some
farms, however, to ease the bur
den off the county fairground’s?
water system, reportedly provid
ed water for themselves by fill
ing bulk tanks at home and
bringing it with them.
But ironically, considering
the extremely dry conditions
that have persisted since last
spring, the typical rains that
folks have come to expect for the
annual affair arrived as usual.
Several scheduled outdoor activ
ities were throughly dampened
by soaking downpours.
