812-Uncistef Farming, Saturday, September 18, 1999 Danny Miller Steer Wins Grand At Somerset MEYERSDALE (Somerset Co.) “I’m so happy my dream came true,” reported an ecstatic Danny Miller, 17, Meyersdale, when his Angus cross steer at the Somerset County Fair was pronounced grand champion of the 1999 Market Steer Show. When judge Jameson Walker Dan Miller, 17, of the Buffalo Creek 4-H Club, had the grand champion steer at the Someset County Fair, and Angus weighing 1,255 pounds. With him is Jameson Walker, type judge and Natali F 11, fr champion steer at the Somerset County Fair. It was also the club calf sale champion. The 13-year old from Wellersburg is Joined by Judge Jameson Walker from Guys Mills. from Guys Mills, Crawford County, commented that the steer’s finish was great and its muscling excellent, the words were music to Miller’s ears. “The steer has power and bal ance,” Walker said. Danny’s parents are Lee and Bonnie Miller and his sister, Beth is 12. The Buffalo Creek 4-Ifer had exercised the steer daily, taking the fine specimen out at 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. when temperatures were most comfortable. Morning and evening, neigh bors of “Just an Acre Farm,” located on the edge of Meyersdale, would watch the progression down the hill and up again. At weigh-in, “Snots” regis tered 1,255 pounds. The teen-ager believes much is owed to his parents for their support last year when Danny spent three months recovering from serious back surgery in October. The steer’s feeding and fitting at the time was tem porarily handled by them. Gabriel Svonavec of Rockwood had the reserve champion with a crossbred steer weighing 1,170 pounds. The ani mal was the club calf sale cham pion as well. Gabriel, 14, is Dave and Betty Lou Svonavec’s son. Shawn Troutman’s Chi Angus Maine cross-bred steer was the county bred champion and Jesse Brant, Rockwood, had the county bred reserve champi on, a 1,215-pound Main Angus crossbred. Troutman, 13, is the son of Larry and Kathy Troutman, Wellersburg. The 17-year-old Brant is the son of David and Carol Brant. Because of the dorught, hos ing the animals was permitted only on the day of judging. Some farms, however, to ease the bur den off the county fairground’s? water system, reportedly provid ed water for themselves by fill ing bulk tanks at home and bringing it with them. But ironically, considering the extremely dry conditions that have persisted since last spring, the typical rains that folks have come to expect for the annual affair arrived as usual.
