The Lancaster County 4-H Horse and Pony Clubs recently held County 4-H roundup. Roundup is a gathering of horse and pony clubs throughout the county who meet to compete against each other to qualify for the district level show. After that, they hope to go on to state compe tition. These shows are an opportunity for the participants to win awards for their efforts in grooming and general care taking of their animals and conditioning and training them. Showpersons who placed in the top three of any class would then go on to the district show. The fol lowing Sequoia Riders Club mem bers are now eligible to show at the district level: Jessie Barker of Elizabethtown placed third in English grooming and showman ship. Jessie placed second in the Eng lish grooming and showmanship. Katie Parmer of Elizabethtown placed thrid in western grooming and showmanship and also placed second in western pleasure ponies (over 13.2 and not ova 1 14.2). Ka tie’s project is an Appaloosa named “King Diamond K.” Jen Slater of Elizabethtown placed third in stock seat equitation senior division. Jen’s project is a Quarter Horse named “Bo Jacks Sugar King.” The 4-H district show will be at the Lebanon Equine Center (Leb anon Faiigrounds) on Aug. 28, and will begin promptly at 8 a.m. Competitors come from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. The quality of the candidates added to the difficulty of the judging pro cess. Finalists are: • Henry L. Left, Angie Beshore of New Cumberland shows the Holstein grand champion and Daphne Doll of Glen Rock shows the reserve champion. Farm Bureau Young Farmer Achievement Award Finalists eau Board. Sandefer in partner ship with his family, owns and operates Sandefer Hill Farm in Rome, N.Y., where updating his operation, the milking herd, young stock, crops, and seed business keep him busy. His involvement in a variety of agricultural indus try organizations and as a volun teer graduate assistant for the Dale Carnegie Course have provided an abundance of opportunity for growth in many ways. • Jennifer G. Halsey of Water Mill, Long Island, a member of the Long Island Farm Bureau board of directors, as well as the NYFB State YFR Committee. Halsey, the 12th generation of her farming family, and three family members partner in their diversi fied operation. Her sphere of re sponsibility includes all aspects from cropping to sales, via their farm store and wholesaling, for the peaches, pumpkins, apples, blueberries, and beekeeping and agricultural education outreach. Community and agricultural in volvement rounds out the busy life And Selected of this finalist. • Dean and Melanie Casey of Schaghticoke, members of the Rensselaer County Farm Bureau of which Dean is president. The Caseys are die fourth generation to operate their farm. Their enter prise is a purchased feed dairy operation with 100 head of milk ers that are complemented by cus tom calf-raising utilizing two greenhouses, where they raise ap proximately 200 head each year. Melanie and Dean’s partnership brings varied expertise to their operation and to the many or ganizations within agriculture and the community where they give so much. Familyu life has just ex panded with the birth of Nicholas Dean, who with his brother, Ke vin, may be the next fanning gen eration. The state winner will be select ed at the New York Farm Bureau annual meeting in December in Albany, and will represent New York at the American Farm Bur eau Convention in Houston, Tex as, in January 2000. ! !
