Guernsey Youth Awarded For Accomplishments REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO - Playing an active role in the advancement of the Guernsey breed, using hands-on experi ence to learn more about the breed and leadership skills are the decisive factors in the National Outstanding Guernsey Youth competition. Young dairy enthusiasts from around the nation competed for this distinc tion at the 1999 National Guernsey Convention in Dublin, Ohio, on June 25,1999. ' Victoria Ansell of Scottdale, Pennsylvania, took home the title of the 1999 National Outstanding Guernsey Youth. She is the daughter of Larry and Susan Ansell and attends the Pennsylvania State University, where she is majoring in dairy and animal science. Victoria said that being a member of the Pennsylvania Junior Guernsey Breeders’ Association is like being a member of a large fami ly. “Everyone looks out for you and cares for you. Several people have reached out to me through Guernseys and have helped me to understand that there is more to dairying than just work. It is Holcomb Honored For Distinguished Service , served as president of his local 4-H club and president of Broome County 4-H Club Council for two years. Holcomb has been premier breeder and exhibitor numerous times at shows as prestigious as New York State Fair, Eastern States Exposition and the National Guernsey Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He has also shown junior, senior and grand champions at these shows. All of these accomplish ments have resulted in numer ous All-American honors. Robert is known in the New York and New England area for his knowledge of Guernseys and his willingness to help promote the breed. He is a strong sup porter of Guernsey youth, and new breeders can always count on his support and advice. Guernsey Board Takes Action REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO - The American Guernsey Association honored Robert Holcomb of Greene, New York, for his distinguished service to the Guernsey breed at the 1999 National Guernsey Convention in Dublin, Ohio, on June 26. Holcomb has held many posi tions affiliated with Guernseys. These positions include Director of District 1 on the American Guernsey Association Board of Directors from 1986-1994 and president of the New York State Guernsey Breeders Cooperative, Inc. He is also an important part of his community. He is a mem ber of the First United Methodist Church and was a 4-H and FFA member. He also REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO - The American Guernsey Association __ Board of Directors held their annual meeting at the association’s national conven tion in Dublin, Ohio, June 23-26. The board, lead by president John Morrow of Tyrone, Pennsylvania, made many posi tive actions for the upcoming year. The following movements were taken by the board at this meeting: Approved 1998 financials, showing a net profit for the American Guernsey Association and Purebred Publishing, Inc. of $22,960. a love for the Guernsey cow and what she represents,” Ansell said. Victoria received the $5OO Lawrence Colebank Award and a lifetime membership to the American Guernsey Association for her accomplishments. Nichole Tyrrell, first runner up in the National Guernsey Outstanding Youth Contest, is a student at the Univer|i|y of Minnesota, St. Paul, and fs the daughter of Dennis and Cheryl Tyrrell. They live on the family farm, Oak Crest Farm, in Browerville, Minnesota. On their farm operation, Nichole is responsible for tasks such as giving shots, milking and taking care of fresh cows. She has been involved in 4-H and FFA, in which she was awarded the State Farmer distinction. She has served as president of the Minnesota Junior Guernsey Breeders’ Association. Nichole received $5O to assist with her travel to the national conven tion. All breeders will be required to provide a color photograph in order to register Guernsey Type (GT) animals. Winherd, a windows based herdbook software program, will be purchased to replace the old registration software which was not Y2K compliant. 8-year-old junior members will now be eligible to show in national junior shows where show managements allow. The crowd gathered at Land of Living Farm on June 26, 1999, to witness 56 lots sell with an average of $3,192. “Top-notch consignments, excellent cattle-preparation and facilities, and a growing demand for registered Guernseys all con tributed to the highest national sale average in breed history,” said Seth Johnson, executive secretary of the American Guernsey Association. Topping the sale for females at $8,500 was Land of Living J Gracious-ET, purchased by John Ayars of Mechanicsburg, Ohio and Dr. Kenny Joe Manion of Scottsville, Kentucky. Sired by Land of Living V Joey-ET, “Gracious” is Excellent-90 with records of 18.770 M 5.0% 931 F 3.6% 673 P at 2-03 in 365 days. She is the daughter of Wincrest Vayette Grace, EX-95, a world class leader for milk production in 365 days with a record at 4-01 of 41.420 M 4.7% 1,961 F 3.2% 1,305 P. “Gracious” was con signed by Land of Living Farms of Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Maplehurst Keane’s Joy, pur chased for $B,OOO by Friendship Farms, Millbrook, New York, was the second high-selling female of the sale. “Joy” is sired by Land of Living V Keane-ET and is the daughter of Maplehurst BJ Joyce-ET. Her grandam is Laeschland Mercury Bridget, VG-86, who made over 21,000 M at 3-11. The next dam is the well-known Laeschland TS Biddy, EX-94. She was con signed by Ken Forster of Lynden, Ontario, Canada. The high-selling Guernsey Gold heifer was Yellow Creek Lord Terri, a Trotacre Mercury Lord-ET daughter with a PA of +1.375M +63F +SOP +S2OSCY. “Terri” was consigned by Truman Weaver and Steven Cochard of Goshen, Indiana. She was purchased by R. Tony Fulton of Los Alamos, California, for $2,600. The Guernsey Gold Heifer Program is a small sale of select open heifers available for bidding by junior members between the ages of six and 19. Fifteen per cent of the gross proceeds from .the sale of these heifers goes into a pot and is divided into four awards for a production contest. The production contest ranking rs based on the animal’s 2-year-old ' pasture equivalent pounds of protein. Highlighting the event was the sale of the Four Winds Dynasty bull syndicate to syndi cate members and Semex Alliance for $14,750. Seventy shares were sold at $2OO each. “Dynasty” is sired by Four Winds Magicman-ET and is out of the EX-90 1998 Unanimous All American Sr. 2-year-old who made over 20,000 M at 2-05. The grandam is the world renown Westlynn Tom Dee, EX-96, who was grand champion at World Dairy Expo four consecutive years. “Dee” has gained respect in production circles as well, making over 26,000 M at 5-11. “Dynasty” was consigned by Clark and Joy Vilter of Hartland, Wisconsin. The sale was managed by Guernsey Marketing Service and the Ohio Guernsey Weaver Named 1999 Master Breeder REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO - Truman Weaver of Goshen, Indiana, was chosen to receive the 1999 American Guernsey Association’s Master Breeder Award at the National Guernsey Convention in Dublin, Ohio, on June 26. Weaver is the fourth genera tion to own and operate Yellow Creek Farm. In 1931, hid father, Oscar, started breeding regis tered Guernseys. In 1959, Truman started a partnership with his father and took over sole ownership in 1977. Today, Yellow Creek Farm is still going strong, milking 76 cows. The herd had the highest herd aver age in Indiana in 1997. Truman is currently a mem ber of DHIA, Indiana Guernsey Breeders’ Association, American Guernsey Association, Elkhart County Farm Bureau and Lake Elects New Directors REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO - Tfye ballots for two seats on the American Guernsey Associa > tion’s Board of Directors were tallied at the associations 1999 national convention in Dublin, Ohio. The following names were announced at the annual meet ing held on June 26,1999. Gene Cross of Sherburn, Minnesota, was elected to repre sent District Five. Gene and his wife, lone, own Cross Lea Guernseys. Gene has served as president of the Martin County American Dairy Association, president of the Southwest Minnesota Guernsey Breeders’ Association, president of the Minnesota Guernsey Breeders’ Association and has served on their board of directors for 12 years. As a member of the American Guernsey Association, he has served on nominating committees, election committees and resolution committees. Mozier of Stanley, Kansas, was re-elected to serve on the board of directors as a director-at-large. John and his wife, Mary Lou, own approxi mately 50 Guernseys. Register ed Guernseys have been owned by the Mozier family since 1948. Prior to his retirement, Mozier worked for the Animal Health Research and Development Department of Chemagro Corporation, a predecessor com pany of Bayer. He is a member of the American Guernsey Association, the Missouri and Kansas Guernsey Breeders’ Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He is also an active member of the Golden Guernsey Committee and is very involved in coordi nating the research on Guernsey milk. John believes that his management experience will serve him well as a member of the board of directors. The brothers started dairy farming as calf feeders at the ages of four and five. They said that these responsibilities at such a young age taught them to love Guernseys. As a reward for their hard work, the boys were given a calf or two per year.
