Local Holstein steers closed steady to .50 higher in a fairly light test. Slaughter cows finished mostly steady to weak and bulls traded LOO lower. The National Holstein Women’s Scholarship Organization awarded five $lOOO scholarships at the National Holstein Convention held in Boise Idaho. The 1999 winners were: Nathan Dorshorst of Junction City, Wisconsin, will be entering his sophomore year at the University of Wisconsin- Madison this fall where he is majoring in dairy science. He says that he is very confident in the future of the dairy industry. After graduation Nathan plans to attend vet school and eventu ally return to his home area with a large animal practice. Leah Hurtgen of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, an animal science mayor, will be a junior at Cornell University in the fall. She is enrolled in the Cornell-in- Washington program for the fall term. Leah is looking toward a career in agriculture, possibly in agricultural law and public poli cy- Julie Kelsey of Canastota, New York, attends Cornell University where she will be a sophomore this fall. She has been a Cornell Presidential Research Scholar assisting with research with CLA.
