large directors and one ex-officic
state association representative
will also be named to the interim
board.
“The Transition Team felt that
by naming an Interim Board for
the National Sheep Association,
leadership would be provided in
the start-up phase of the organiza
tion while giving potential mem
bers the opportunity to join and
elect the people that they want to
lead the industry forward,” said
Mike Caskey, Pipestone, Minn.,
sheep producer and chairman of
the Transition Team. ‘This new
organization is designed to be
member-guided, so the team felt it
was essential that the membership
elect the first board of directors.”
As the only industrywide or
ganization, the National Sheep
Association allows all segments of
the industry to come together
producers, feeders, lamb packers
and processors, wool buyers,
warehouses and textile manufac
turers, state and breed associa
tions, and others in the industry.
The unique organizational struc
ture provides for the establishment
of forums allocated to the
ent segments of the industry. Each
forum can interact on issues and
concerns unique to their side of
the business and work coopera
tively with other segments on mat
ters of importance to the industry
as a whole.
“This is a significant change
from the current federation of
states that the national organiza
tion has utilized for many years,”

NSA fosters an industrywide vi
sion and cooperative approach to
problem solving, building indus
try coalitions and developing busi
ness opportunities.
Some of the fundamentals ol
the new organization plan revolve
around the ability of the National
Sheep Association to serve as a
catalyst to strengthen and advance
the sheep industry. It will build an
industrywide plan for future
growth and profitability by allow
ing participants to address oppor
tunities and challenges, develop
creative solutions, and take ac
tions necessary to make changes
in the market system by promot
ing innovation and positioning the
industry as consumer responsive.
"One of the exciting aspects of
the new National Sheep Associa
tion structure is the creation of a
Business Development Council,”
noted Tom Boyer, Coalville, Utah
sheep producer and chairman of
the implementation Task Force
that helped define the concept and
function of the BDC. “The BDC is
an important component of the
National Sheep Association’s ef
forts to provide ways for existing'
organizations and individuals to
work together to develop and im
plement an industrywide strategic
plan that positions the industry for
growth and profitability. We envi
sion die BDC to be the R & D
dynamo which will stimulate the
industry and help turn it around.”
