Colonial Williamsburg recreates 18th cen
tury living, including livestock representative
of George Washington’s time. Elaine Shir
ley, livestock husbander for Colonial Wil
liamsburg and board of directors member for
the American Livestock Breeds Conservan
cy, will discuss how the Leicester Longwool
sheep was selected for the restoration.
“After teetering.on extinction in North
America in the 1980 s, the breed currently
numbers over 100 animals, established in 12
flocks across the region. Handspinners love
its long, lustrous wool,” Shirley said.
Leicester Longwools from Colonial Wil
liamsburg’s flock will be on hand in the Fes
tival’s breed display bam and participate in
the “Parade of Breeds.”
Shirley’s talk will also touch on her ex
perience with other heritage livestock breeds
including Milking Devon cattle and Ameri
can Cream horses.
