Two hundred-year-old sheep and their wonderful wool will be fea tured at the 26th annual Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, in a spe cial presentation on Colonial Wil liamsburg’s rare Leicester Long wools. Colonial Williamsburg recreates 18th cen tury living, including livestock representative of George Washington’s time. Elaine Shir ley, livestock husbander for Colonial Wil liamsburg and board of directors member for the American Livestock Breeds Conservan cy, will discuss how the Leicester Longwool sheep was selected for the restoration. “After teetering.on extinction in North America in the 1980 s, the breed currently numbers over 100 animals, established in 12 flocks across the region. Handspinners love its long, lustrous wool,” Shirley said. Leicester Longwools from Colonial Wil liamsburg’s flock will be on hand in the Fes tival’s breed display bam and participate in the “Parade of Breeds.” Shirley’s talk will also touch on her ex perience with other heritage livestock breeds including Milking Devon cattle and Ameri can Cream horses.
