Poor cow foot health cost dairy producers profits. As dairy producers increase production and herd size, foot problems often increase as well. And cows pushed for optimum production will spend more time on their feet at the feed bunk and in the parlor, opening the possibility for foot problems. To increase dairy producers’ and industry professionals’ understanding of the dynamic issues associated with foot health, Penn State Cooperative Extension, Monsanto Dairy Business, and the Zinpro Corporation are sponsoring a program called, “Improving the Dynamics of Foot Health at Your Dairy to Maximize Profits.” This one-day seminar on dairy cow foot health will be held in three locations in Pennsylvania on March 23-25. Presenters include Dr. Jan Shearer, Dr. Gabriella Varga, Dr. Chris Canale, and Dan McFarland. Shearer, from the University of Florida, will discuss the type of foot problems commonly encountered in dairy herds and how to prevent many of them. This presentation will also relate foot problems to hot weather management as dairy cow foot problems always increase during periods of heat stress.
