Paul’s dad continues to help on die farm, but Shirley helps with the milking morning and evening. All the children help with the chores. “It was a big adjustment for me to milk everyday when we first moved on the farm,” Shirley said, “but I love it.” The children help out with household chores, but Shirley makes sure to find time to continue to bake—one of her hobbies. Although the family shows at Lebanon Fair and All American, they won’t be showing at the state Farm Show. “That’s because we don’t really have enough help and time to keep everything running smoothly at home and at the Farm Show,” said Paul, who has fond memories of showing when he was a teen-ager. Despite the daily chores on the farm, the children are encouraged to take advantage of off-the-farm opportunities. Two years ago, Jamie spent eight weeks in Brazil with a teen mission group. “We lived in a tent and bathed in the creek. We even washed our clothes in the creek," Jamie said. The clothing was thrown away because it was impossible to remove the brownish white color from river washing. “The experience really helped me to appreciate home," Jamie said. CHOP-RITE TWO, INC. Although it is not defi nite, he is counting on going to Alaska for 11 weeks. Although they live in Lancaster County, the children are 4-H dairy club members in Lebanon County. “We are closer to Lebanon County 4-H meetings than Lancas ter County,” Jamie said. Jamie’s 4-H involvement has decreased because she is busy as the alternate dairy princess. Her mother serves as chaperone at the many dairy promotions in which Jamie participates. Her favorite so far was the milk mustache promo tion at Weaver’s Markets in Adamstown. In addition to serving as alter nate dairy princess and helping on the farm, Jamie works at Key Aid Ace Hardware. She is a junior at Ephrata High School where she is a member of FFA. All family members arc active at Calvary Church, Lancaster. Paul is a member of the Ephrata Area Young Farmers’ Associa tion. He also serves on the board of Gospel Express, a prison ministry. Paul is in charge of the heifer sale that is used to raise funds for the ministry. He said about 30 heifers are donated annually and pur chased by other farmers at the annual frmd-raising auction. Because their farm borders the turnpike, it is not unusual for motorists who run out of gas to knock on the Homing’s door. The farm was also part of the neighbor hood search for some convicts fleeing police. The unused bathtub has been converted into a bed for overnight guests. At first she stuffed it with blankets and pillows as a temporary measure, but the bath tub bed became such a popular conversational piece that Jamie intends to keep it. Despite the occasional hassles of fanning near the turnpike, the dairy farm is aesthetically appeal ing. The stone gabled bam and farmhouse is situated on a stand of timber and gendy sloping land. “We love sharing the farm with others," Shirley said.
