B244.ancMter Farming, Saturday, December 5, 1998 FFA Convention Makes Connection Between Education, Future (Continued from Page 822) Plant City, Fla., was named the recipient of the H.O. Sargent Award for FFA members. He received $5OO and a plaque. The H.O. Sargent award existed in the New Farmers of America (NFA), the former orga nization for African-American agriculture students, before NFA was merged with FFA in 1965. This is the second year for FFA members to apply for this award. Keene has been an active member of the FFA for five years. His involvement in the promotion of diversity began because he had three relatives who were mentally handicapped and he wanted to show other people their positive attitudes. He established a club at his school called “Buddies in Growing,” or “8.1. G.,” which teams special needs students with regular education students for school activities. The train able mentally handicapped (TMH) students have increased chapter membership and proud ly wear their FFA jackets at var ious activities. “Having the TMH students present at our meetings give our chapter the opportunity to learn about positive attitudes from them,” Keene said. “These stu dents are without a doubt the most enthusiastic members pre sent." “Barrett has always made my students feel welcome and accepted in class, when he sees them in the halls, at lunch or at FFA meetings,” said Sandy Denham, TMH teacher at Plant City High School. “He has been instrumental in my students’ successes.” The National FFA Organization established the H.O. Sargent Award for non members in 1995 to recognize the NFA and its place in the his tory of the FFA.
