A3O-Lancaatcr Farming, Saturday, December 5, 1998 Westmoreland 4-H/FFA Livestock DAVID HIEBERT Westmoreland Corespondent MUTUAL (Westmoreland Co.) - The Westmoreland County Jr. Livestock Committee spon sored the livestock sale at the Westmoreland County Fair held earlier this year. Gross proceeds of the sale were $105,063.05, according to Joan E. Logan, extension agent for 4-H/Youth The sale also presents the oppor tunity for businesses and indi viduals to contribute to a county 4-H scholarship fund, which began in 1994. Funds collected at the county livestock show and sale amounted to over $3,610 according to Eleanor Swogger, 4-H program assistant, Penn State Extension office, Greensburg. In addition, a benefit auction at the fair netted more than $l,OOO additional for the scholarship fund. Add to the possible scholarship, an additional advantage for youth created by the livestock sale. The "above market price" earned at the sale is illustrated in the following summary of sale prices (all in LB) for the 305 lots of ani mals sold. Carcass hog market price $0.64; sale aver age of champions $3.00, Awards total climbs to twenty-eight, After a breather following the fair, the Westmoreland County 4-H Memorial Scholarship fund awarded ten scholarships of $5OO each at a 4-H Achievement Night held November 10,1998. The scholarship programs grows through the continue support of indi viduals and organizations. Since beginning in 1994 the fund has granted twenty-eight schol arships primarily to 4-H vouth. Kelly scholarship award is given to a livestock youth planning to study at an agricultural college. Receiving the award this year is Carolyn Virginia Schramm of Jeannette. Carolyn is a member of Alwme Community 4-H Club and the Westmoreland County 4- H Investors. Carolyn is a senior at Penn Trafford High School and plans to attend Penn State University majoring in agricul tural science. Carolyn attended the Governor's School in Agriculture in 1997. The recipient of this scholarship may be either a 4-H or FFA members. A second annual award has gone to Kenneth P. Reed 11, Derry. Ken is a member of Mountain View Ag, Travel-All, and New Alexandria Home Ec 4- H Clubs. He is a senior at Derry Area High School, planning to attend Penn State University, majoring in agriculture science and planning on a career in the agricultural field. PA 17540 • 717 Sales Tops $105,000 animal science or dairy member planning to study Agriculture Science at Penn State, is named for Joe Thurston, a Westmoreland County Extension agent- for 35 years until his retirement in 1972. Joseph was instrumental in starting the Westmoreland Fair. Eight others also received scholarships including: Angela Marie Pecora, Jeannette a member of Slickville Ag 4-H Club and the Westmoreland County 4-H Council. She showed the grand Champion market hog at the 1998 Westmoreland Livestock show. She attended Penn Trafford High School and is a freshman at St. Vincent College majoring in accounting. She plans to become a certified public accountant. Jereme Jon Donnelly, Jeannette, a member of West Hempfield Vogues 4-H Club. He is a senior at Penn Trafford High School and plans to attend Penn State, majoring in architecture and to pursue a career in architecture. Glenn Scott Hawkey, New Alexandria, is a member of Slickville Ag 4-H Club. He attended the Kiski School and is a freshman at Virginia Tech majoring in agricultural econom ics.
